8 giugno mobilitazione per i diritti dei rom

[Massimo Iacobelli]

In the last weeks, has unleashed a real hunt for "gypsy" with a growing number of incidents of violence against men, women and Roma children.
A dangerous silence is created around these episodes and very few exponents of culture and politics have spoken about these unfortunate circumstances. For this reason
Them Romanó Onlus held Sunday, June 8 in Rome to mobilize in favor of respecting the rights of Roma and Sinti people. A civil protest against racism and for respect of international conventions for the rights of peoples.
To join the initiative and to know the time and location of the event: associazionethemromano .

Alex Santino Spinelli, National President of the National Association Onlus Romano Them, lists some points to improve the situation of Roma in Italy and to combat the wave of racism that has befallen our country. These include:

security and law enforcement should be guaranteed for all, including Roma and Sinti. In contrast with the articles of the Italian Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European and international standards, the Roma people in Italy are forced to live in inhumane conditions.

Today, a whole population is criminalized but mistakes are individuals and it is they who must be punished, not the nation or the people they belong to. To help us engage the integration of those who demonstrate a clear desire to avoid social participation to equate those who deserve and those who commit crimes.

E 'need to dismantle the camps, actual garbage cans, degraded places, centers of racial segregation and permanent symbol of discrimination.

Roma and Sinti are not nomadic culture. Those who are now living in camps, yesterday had a house in Romania or the former Yugoslavia. Mobility is always forced and is never a choice. In our country 70% of the Romany population has Italian citizenship and has lived in the houses (the Romans arrived in the fifteenth century).

All this creates a wrong image of an entire population.

We must take note of the blatant failure of the forms of assistance to voluntary organizations have continued to date. Each year we squander hundreds of thousands of € for projects of little or no value.

This raises the urgency of creating in Italy a council made up of Roma and Sinti intellectuals who have an international experience on the reality of the Romani community that can support the mediation in the resolution of social and political problems.
