La Classe. Una analisi per avvicinamenti progressivi.
Film classy, \u200b\u200b Class , who won the last Cannes Film Festival. That pushed many to add to my topic praise.
Inside the walls of a middle school (Entre les murs is in fact the original title of the film) of the Paris suburbs the most culturally diverse and messy, we are called upon to assist in the staging of a great challenge to me the nature of which comes from summarized as: how to transmit knowledge and knowledge to a group of girls and boys between thirteen and fifteen years living in a suburb of the French capital, houses inside the representatives of the countries once belonged to the Empire, from Mali to Algeria, from Morocco to the West Indies, with the addition of two Chinese boys immigrants recently ? They are teenagers and then they already grappling with changes, hormonal storms, search for identity. And they live in a world already struggling with his labor of a whirlwind transformation. They are in fact carrying habits, languages, cultural sensitivity and highly differentiated models. It can be found inserted every day for nine months in a large room furnished in summary form, in a building pompously called school. What keeps them together without that outweigh the destructive pressures of a latent - but not too much - anarchic conflict, or to withdraw into their shells indifferent to listening anxiously awaiting the bell? What they may get out of that shell, care must be true to their surroundings, be available for groped a path of intellectual growth and moral common?
Without indulging in sentimentality sweetish, without imposing melodramatic excesses and exaggerations often used in so many films about the school in past years, without hiding the difficulties and obstacles, sometimes insurmountable daunting because (some of the boys' parents are invited to talk at school even speak the language of their host country), the film gives an answer. And the answer is passionate commitment of a teacher who tries to convey in everyday practical sense, the value, the importance for everyone - for children especially in such a world - a progressive acquisition of knowledge and background necessary to know . But in general, and not in the abstract, not in compliance with a program prepared and pre-digested, not in obedience to an external order often incomprehensible and hostile, but just from the subjective reality of the boys, their problematic experience, their experience of doubt , uncertainties, aspirations and dreams.
The film works just to show persuasively make the difficult and slow path of this extraordinary and necessary, not only because the director, Laurent Cantet, is good - and with him very good boys and girls in class - but because the story and the script are taken from a book / testimony whose author is also the protagonist of the film teacher. Staged by the events it is clear that mutual respect, and respect for the rules of a discipline necessarily strict, are not obscure fetishes, and no shortcuts and clever rhetoric to Gelmini, but the frame and tack of a sense of the school and a purpose that is precisely in enhancing and acquire dignity to all, provided that participants in a shared work research method, languages, techniques necessary for that purpose.
At the end of the children receive from their teacher, reflecting the good work, personalized copy of the self that each episode has described and illustrated with drawings and photos, thus helping to create a class and non-formal bureaucratic, but made by individuals who have been working together a little at a time known, measured, estimated. Of course, not everything can and has happened. One of the boys, Suleiman, although the most talented, and despite the best efforts and intentions of the professor, can not do it to find its own niche construction. Reacts badly to the point of being expelled from school and from class. And This is also the professor is forced to deal with its limitations and errors.
Despite the many obstacles, difficulties and resistance, as never before that characterize the functioning of the school and the training result, the class is able to effectively communicate the message that today more than ever for this girls and boys need of help and guide, claiming credibility and passion, expertise and availability in real teachers they encounter. And when with their infallible antennae and hungry expectations perceive the true commitment, the passion free, the most, each in its own way, sooner or later match. The weather that follows, the obstacles that faces can be defined heroic, but the sparks and emits vibrations that is exciting to define and even erotic. But as a true transition of knowledge and knowledge among adults and children can never be, unless in the presence of a power of emotions and feelings that has to do with energy and force of falling? And without the energy that only one form of relationship that has to do with seduction and falling in is able to inspire, how can there be real teaching / learning? At the end of the year, even the most unpleasant and seemingly refractory girls unexpectedly confident that you have read at home, taking it away with his elder sister, The Republic of Plato. And indulges in a poignant account of what it has drawn, being especially fascinated by the constant questioning by Socrates, to anyone he met on the street on her life, love, dreams, projects, religion, death . Then: The Class and school today? Socrates, in fact.
Class 2
I would add to the previous tab integration. Starting with a question: what can you blame the equally beautiful film by Laurent Cantet? Perhaps two things. The first: 25 boys and girls who make up the class, except a few, are simply enchanting. Beautiful, tender, expressive, seductive. Just good. Cantet has not taken a regular class, evidently together in one class the best types found within the entire school, or across multiple schools. This, admittedly, sounds a bit 'a clever bit. Everybody is of the young persons best represents the ethnic group that is already reflected, and a few nagging suspicion that a transaction with United Colors of Benetton is in effect. Too adorable aesthetic perfection in one class.
The second fact concerns the group of teachers. Apart from the main character, passionate in his extraordinary professionalism, the other does not joke prof. The Dean, calm and balanced pater familias, appears perpetually worried that unless the law is in addition to the letter and spirit and all teachers express in their work to the best that most can not. If, in my experience, in normal schools is a good teacher to be exceptions, here in form it is a bit 'less good, what a little' strung and not fully available. Will this really the reality of French schools, all boys so adorable, and teachers as conscientious and generous? I am reminded of another recent British film ( Notes on a Scandal, Richard Eyre), whose story is also set in a school, where the center of that there is a pretty young teacher who yields to the desire to Do not hesitate to enjoy a spirited and enterprising pimply fifteen. However, there is lurking the old teacher, lesbian and acidic, which, conscious of the unseemly affair and the coveted younger teachers, not scruple to blackmail her just to have it all for himself. A storiaccia transgressive and unpleasant, but rendered so acute psychological and plausible. What is the true reality of the school today, after all the heroic / idealistic staged by Cantet, or the cynical and troubled by the British? Perhaps, each for its part, both. On the other hand, that's better than a young life, beautiful and a little 'crush to be redeemed? And what's more tantalizing and titillating - but also brave - a revelation of what ordinates and sleepy English schools bubbling from the waist down? (A final question: what if the school of our times, a necessary and important things to teach the boys were more teachers, than vice versa? Obama won the election in the U.S. thanks to the Internet, SMS, blogs and Face Book - ie young people, their enthusiasm, their familiarity with the powerful new communication technologies. Meanwhile, and again, the majority of our teachers continue to expect while listening solemnly marks "Tityre patulae recubans you ...")
The Class 3
There is still some point I would like to add The Class by Laurent Cantet - and this too long to germinate thoughts goes to confirm the value of the film. I said the heroic and the erotic climate that is the size of a real relationship of teaching / learning between teachers and students. I also said that the professor is a professor protagonist in the film in reality and what is said in the film is the result of the testimony of his experience in a collection book from which the film is based. Well, the film is an obvious imbalance of attention towards the emotional depth of the boys, and his hand linger almost suspended in the exchange with the girls. It appears then evident in the professor - in the way expression, posture and pose in the same way and walk - some women's value, which does not mean feminine or effeminate, but something that has to do with sensitivity, with the apprehension of women's protective mother. It is no coincidence that Suleiman, the most powerful, direct and frank among boys, at one point the film raises the issue of gossip that has gathered around, namely that the prof liked men. As it is perhaps no coincidence that the film closes with the unexpected entrance into the scene of Socrates, evidently as a model teaching. But what of the reality of the model remains in the film is removed, it was that Socrates with Alcibiades in bed, in a practical pedagogical relationship that does not expunge the sex itself, but rather considered it as part of adjuvant needed.
The problem can also be approached from another angle. Here is an excerpt of the film in which Suleiman, in an exchange of dissent in conflict with the prof, giving him the addresses of you. Obviously this is not a you for understanding and complicity, but of equal pride and challenge. This is considered by Professor intolerable, even considered grounds for disciplinary recommendation to the dean. Faced with the challenge of explicit boy (look what I can choose not to comply with rules of a game where I do not recognize), the professor does not take into consideration that the is delicate and critical step because it involves the foundation of the relationship between two individuals, and so the challenge was to be accepted, and maybe relocated in order to better clarify, at a later time and in a more secluded. Prefers to hide behind the 'authorities' establishment by appealing to the sanctity of its rules. In front of you equally and challenging the boy, the real fear seems to be that of a required verification of the grounds on which a report must be based teaching authentic, but rather that the fall of the distance, where the distance factor is clearly considered indispensable condition authoritativeness. But Socrates, in showing its disciples in their underwear - and without - it lost its authority for this? What do you want to protect by hiding behind an insurmountable distance: respect for competence? Or maybe it is feared that too much closeness dell'altisonante reveal that institutional role has been very little, and perhaps only the empty simulacrum?
Association For me to remember what is in his story notes Silvano Agosti, where it says that our society, having separated from sexuality tenderness, sexuality from love, has turned into hypocrisy, mysticism and pornography. Maybe because what you said you want to separate in order to seize and protect the weak has instead turned into a self-defense its own status and power of adult role in a weakening and withering of social relations and educational interaction at its source? What is hidden in terms of distortion of the truth behind the trappings of narrative construction and ideologically biased?
short, as I hope I have highlighted so far, within the walls of a classroom are made daily in game models and principles, issues and themes that affect not only how to maintain discipline, or how to exercise properly its role now a teacher in a school in the metropolitan periphery, but who we really are as dislocated as the powers and (dis) honestly practice the balance of power, that sense we give to life, what we intend to bequeath to future generations, and how. And shyly let the teacher see that one sex, and highlights the meaning and weight conditioning, positive and negative, will continue to have seduction and eroticism in a pedagogical relationship, even - especially? - When they are held back, denied and removed. And what is not said or poorly disguised and sometimes the best key to understanding a reality.
Class 4
Let us proceed with a final effort in the reflection, a little 'how does the diver descends deeper and deeper in search of sunken treasure. That would exist if such things had gone well. Professor, gay or not gay that is (among other things in the movie, while other professors will give small parties at the news that they are pregnant, the state of our civil - married or engaged or not - nothing is said), possibly test a very human attraction "Socratic" against Suleiman. The latter, with highly sensitive antennae of the boys at that age are provided, he felt. Who knows, maybe the professor has made him understand himself in a more or less explicit. (After all, the English teacher in the film, in a similar situation, then proceed to as an overwhelming locomotive). And the challenge of the boy who gives him an equitable result in you after you have tried the card on the rumors of alleged homosexuality of Professor shall have the meaning of those who claim a declaration / confession. It 's like asking him: in short, who is really you? You are definitely a good teacher and demanding, but you're also much more humane and very close to me?
E 'this is likely to alarm the professor, not a lively little' arrogant bulleggia that the fifteen-O, what drives him to facilitate the expulsion of Suleiman by the school. Among other things, a companion of the report alarmed that Suleiman Suleiman, if expelled, verrebbe punito ben più pesantemente dal padre che lo rispedirebbe dritto in Mali.
